The Duchess of Cambridge is now six months pregnant, and in that time she has impressed many fashion commentators with her refreshing and relaxed approach to maternity wear. Rather than hiding herself away in baggy outfits with little charm and no style, the Duchess has recently appeared to be happy to embrace her new body shape and to consider her pregnancy as a fashion opportunity, rather than something that must be endured.
Last week, while honouring the achievements of Scouts at a ceremony at Windsor Castle, she wore a Mulberry frayed coat in Mint Cotton Tweed with LK Bennett heels. Although the bump was very much in evidence, she still managed the difficult feat of looking both comfortable and stylish. This elegant outfit is just the latest in a series of successful maternity outfits worn by the 31-year-old princess.
Soon after first announcing her pregnancy to the world, the Duchess of Cambridge’s first public engagement was presenting an award at the Sports Personality of the Year ceremony. Millions of viewers across the UK saw the princess step into the limelight wearing a flowing green Alexander McQueen gown, and the stage was set for arguably the most sartorially elegant pregnancy yet.
Confidence in Kate Middleton’s fashion style has been further reinforced by choices of designer maternity dresses and smart outfits that continue to accommodate the bulge comfortably, rather than pretend it isn’t there. It’s true that the winter months meant that for the most part the princess was seen in thick clothing and warm coats when out in public, but since then the weather has improved, and we have been afforded more of a glimpse of the Duchess’s stylish and elegant take on maternity wear.
After a winter break in the Caribbean, she resumed her schedule of public engagements in February and delighted onlookers with their first glimpse of the bump, by ditching the coats and wearing a dress. The sleek Max Mara studio wrap dress she wore at her appearance at an all-female residential centre for recovering addicts in London was accompanied perfectly with a 167 Pendant from Asprey.
Since then, a busier programme of public engagements has delivered more fashion hits. As the weather has improved, so has Kate Middleton’s sense of sartorial adventure. On a recent engagement to open a primary school in Wythenshawe, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a floral silk fitted dress with matching navy blue suede shoes.
In her most recent public engagement, Kate Middleton wowed onlookers with a bump-accentuating and very stylish baby blue Emilia Wickstead cocktail dress and grey suede heels. The chic 50s look was an excellent choice of designer maternity wear, yet another example of Kate Middleton style being all about elegance, comfort and simplicity.
As the bump gets larger, we can only look forward to more examples of Kate Middleton fashion style being brought to bear on maternity wear – good news for followers of fashion and maternity shops alike.
