Explore middle earth with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, or savour the dramatic and moving Les Miserables, nominated for several Oscars. Another contender is The Life of Pi, a visually stunning piece of cinema and there is also Spielberg’s slice of American history, Lincoln, to choose from.

For full escapism, however, why not dip your toes into the familiar land of Oz once more, with the upcoming release Oz: The Great and Powerful, which is released in March this year.

This is a Hollywood fantasy movie, directed by Sam Raimi who gave us the Spiderman trilogy starring Toby Maguire. Oz: The Great and Powerful stars James Franco (who played Harry in the Spiderman trilogy), Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz, who plays Evanora, the wicked witch in the movie.

The film centres on a circus magician, Oscar, who is transported to Oz and believes he has stumbled onto something fabulous, until he meets the three witches (Kunis, Weisz and Williams). They are not convinced that he is the great wizard they have been expecting. Oscar must discover who is good and who is evil, using his magical arts and illusion, and is transformed into a better man whilst doing so.

The Great Gatsby, based on the celebrated novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is released on 10th May in glorious 3D. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, who brought us Romeo and Juliet, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and also stars British actress Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Jason Clarke and Joel Edgerton.

The story focuses on a man’s fascination with his millionaire neighbour. Tobey Maguire is Nick Carraway, a WW1 veteran living on Long Island, who finds himself watching the comings and goings of Jay Gatsby, an enigmatic man who throws lavish parties and entertains the privileged set, including the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Carraway is gradually drawn into this decadent world of the nouveau riche, but when he witnesses dark obsessions, madness and a life changing tragedy, he realises Gatsby’s ideal life is not all as it seems.

Luhrmann’s movie is a dazzling adaptation of the novel and brings the twenties roaring to life. The champagne pool parties, dancing girls and extravagant behaviour are a testament to the New York smart set of the post war years.

Gatsby’s world, however, as seemingly perfect as it is, hides secrets that begin to unravel.

The Great Gatsby is released in May this year.
